Given the current land situation (we are now in the process of buying the community its permanent land), which shifts our role while in Congo, we started thinking of ways in which we can be most useful there because it seemed we might have a lot of extra time on our hands... So unbelievably, we found something PERFECT.
There's an amazing Permaculture Design Course in Konso, Ethiopia, run by the Permaculture Institute of Australia and facilitated by one of the world's leading permaculturists, Rhamis Kent, together with Tichafa Makovere, of Zimbabwe, for his local knowledge and traditional African wisdom, and Alex McCausland, director of Strawberry Fields Eco Lodge, where the course will take place. The course focuses on the application of Permaculture to rural African communities where the successful application of Permaculture is a way to develop long term food security and community empowerment.
The course is of particular relevance for those interested in rural development and indigenous communities in Africa and the wider third world. The focus is on appropriate technology, soil and water harvesting, indigenous knowledge systems and Permaculture in schools.

So as you can see, it's perfect for what we want to achieve in Congo and will give us a better perspective and trainig for what lies ahead for us.
We will still arrive in Congo this Friday, spend a week getting acquainted with the project, meeting the pygmy community and finally meeting Dominique, as well as planning our specific tasks and goals during this new stage of the project. Then we'll fly to Ethiopia for 2 weeks to take the course and return on November 1st to apply what we learned!!
SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS NEW TWIST IN OUR SCHEDULE!!!!!
COUNTDOWN TO CONGO: 3 DAYS!!!!!
